Introducing Osprey AI

Automated Explanations for Your Assets and Calculations

In the world of industrial data, one question comes up again and again — across teams, plants, and systems:

“What is this asset, and what exactly is this calculation doing?”

Sometimes the only answer is silence or a retired engineer’s notebook from 1997.

That’s why we built Osprey AI, a new capability in Tycho Data Osprey that uses AI to explain what your assets represent and decode your most complex PI AF calculations — no reverse engineering required.

Why This Matters: The IT/OT Divide

Industrial data systems are deeply domain-specific. Process engineers might know how a multivariable flow correction formula works, but the data team doesn’t. Meanwhile, the data team knows where that calculation lives and how it’s failing — but they don’t know what it means in the context of a refinery, a turbine, or a paper mill.

Osprey AI bridges that gap.

It brings meaning to the metadata giving both OT and IT teams a shared language around:

  • What an AF element represents in the real world
  • What a calculation is trying to compute
  • Where the inputs are coming from and how they’re derived

What Osprey AI Can Do

1. Explain What an Asset Is

When you open an asset in Osprey, AI automatically generates a summary based on:

  • Element name and template
  • Contextual attributes
  • Connected calculations and display references

Example:
“This is a centrifugal pump used in the crude unit. It operates in a closed-loop system and is monitored for flow, pressure, and vibration. The ‘Pump Efficiency’ calculation evaluates operating efficiency based on inlet/outlet pressure and power consumption.”

2. Decode Complex AF Analyses

Osprey AI reads the structure of your AF analyses and gives you a human-readable explanation.

Example:
“This calculation computes a 24-hour rolling average of the corrected flow, adjusted for temperature using the flow correction factor. It references two upstream analyses and updates every 15 minutes.”

It’s like having a systems engineer walk you through the logic — without needing to find them.

Many Calcs Were Written Decades Ago…

…and nobody remembers how they work.

Across industries, we’ve seen this over and over:

  • A calc defined in 2008 by an engineer who left in 2015
  • A display that uses six nested formulas that no one wants to untangle
  • A plant transfer where incoming teams inherit thousands of AF elements with no documentation

Osprey AI helps make these systems interpretable again.

How It Helps in Real Scenarios

  • IT teams can now support PI System issues with context — no more relying on tribal knowledge
  • OT teams can document and validate calculations without writing manuals
  • Engineers can onboard faster and understand inherited systems without reverse-engineering
  • Audits and reviews go smoother with plain-language summaries
